Ronchi praises IPL

Western Australia batsman Luke Ronchi has given the Indian Premier League the thumbs-up despite a brief and difficult stint with the Mumbai Indians.

Ronchi only played four matches in the IPL, scoring a meagre 34 runs before he made way for the return of Sachin Tendulkar.

Despite his short stint and lack of runs Ronchi, who has a three-year contract in place with the Mumbai Indians, spoke glowingly of his experience.

"It was like nothing I'd experienced in my life. It was well worth the trip," he said after returning to Australia after the Indians failed to reach the semi-finals.

"Walking out to face the first ball in the tournament was out of this world.

"There was a tremendous din in the stadium and I started shaking as the bowler was running in. You get used to it once you play a couple of games."

Ronchi had originally not registered his name in the IPL's initial auction, but was enticed to Mumbai after a sensational 2007-08 season for Western Australia, where he scored the fasted domestic one-day century in history off 56 balls.

He opened the batting alongside Sri Lanka veteran Sanath Jayasuriya in the opening few games in front of sell-out crowds and believes that the IPL will only get bigger in the coming years.

He said: "I think a more English players would come in. And there is also talk of unlimited funds for franchisees to buy whoever they want.

"If that happens, it's going to be out of this world. Some players are going to make a lot of money."

Ronchi believes fellow Australian Shaun Marsh can be one of them.

Marsh, who has never played for his country, currently wears the Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer in the IPL.

Marsh has scored 593 runs from 10 matches at an average of 74.12 and could score more when his team, Punjab Kings XI, meets Chennai Super Kings in the semi-finals.

Indeed, Marsh has been rated the best value for money player in the IPL after the left-handed Western Australian was enticed to Punjab by his WA coach Tom Moody for the minor sum of just US$30,000, a trifle compared to the $1.7 million paid to India's national one-day skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

A Long IPL weekend

The long wait is over. The 56-match IPL preliminary league has run its course and the four semi-finalists have been spotted. Valverde's decision to go

Espanyol president Daniel Sanchez Llibre has revealed it was entirely Ernesto Valverde's decision to leave his position as coach of the Primera Liga club.

Mcbride leaves Fulham

Fulham have confirmed captain Brian McBride has decided to leave the club and return to America.


The veteran striker met with Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson at the club's training ground to discuss his future and has decided to move on after four and a half years.

Ryder ruled out of one dayers

Opening batsman Jesse Ryder will miss New Zealand's one-day series against England after failing to recover sufficiently from a hand injury.


The 23-year-old underwent surgery on his right hand in February after putting it through a window in a bar while celebrating New Zealand's one-day series win against England.


Ryder had stepped up his recovery last week, batting in the nets, but it appears he was still having difficulty fielding and he will now be replaced by Peter Fulton, who is already in England with the Test side.

Ryder's absence will be a blow to New Zealand. The big hitter had a successful debut one-day series against the English in New Zealand in February, scoring 196 runs at an average of 49, and he is also a useful medium pace change bowler.

Man united issue fifa threat

Manchester United have insisted they may report Real Madrid to FIFA over their public pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Premier League and European champions issued a statement this evening describing their "growing irritation" at continuing comments seemingly emerging from the Spanish club concerning their interest in the Portugal attacker.

The statement, released on their website, manutd.com, said: "Manchester United has watched with growing irritation the comments attributed to Real Madrid over their alleged desire to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

"The facts are: the player is on a long-term contract and his registration is held by Manchester United; The player is not for sale.

"The club will have no alternative but to report Real Madrid to the world governing body, FIFA, if it continues to behave in this totally unacceptable fashion. These public attempts to unsettle the player are completely against the regulations and the club will not tolerate them any longer.

"In addition, the club is certain that they are a distraction for the Portuguese national squad as they prepare for the European Championships. No one should be in any doubt that Manchester United will do everything in its power to keep its best players."

Madrid coach Bernd Schuster confirmed Ronaldo is his club's number one summer transfer target.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already voiced his dislike of Madrid touting for Ronaldo, pointing out their major domestic rivals, Barcelona, refrain from public expressions of admiration for other clubs' players.

That tactic has worked for Barca in securing the services of United defender Gerard Pique on a four-year contract on Tuesday.

But with any softly-softly approach for Ronaldo almost certain to meet with failure, Real have decided to come out all guns blazing.

And Schuster's latest comments seem to have prompted a curt response from United today.

Ferguson is sure to be infuriated by Schuster referring to the 23-year-old in a manner that would suggest the signing has virtually been completed.

"There are other players we have been looking at but everything has slowed down a little due to all this Cristiano Ronaldo business, seeing as he is the big priority for the club," said Schuster.

"The English way has been a perfect education for a player with such exceptional individual talent.

"There he has learned to enjoy his football as a complete professional. This means we would get a Cristiano who would arrive here with his lessons learned."

Given such a statement, Ferguson is probably glad he is due to embark on his annual summer holiday next week, thus avoiding what is sure to be a regular stream of stories linking Ronaldo with a move to Madrid.

For his part, the United boss is adamant Ronaldo neither wants to, nor will be, leaving Old Trafford this summer, claiming last week the acid test of the relationship between player and club will not be faced for another two years.

By that time, Ferguson expects his team to have added at least one more European Cup to a tally they took to three with their penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea in Moscow last week.

In addition, they could have overtaken Liverpool's record of 18 English championships; United moving to within one with their latest success, the 10th of Ferguson's 23-year stint as manager.

Not that Real are likely to be dissuaded by history.

Although they, like United, have won back-to-back titles, European success has remained frustratingly out of reach since 2002 for the nine-time winners, a record Schuster is determined to put right with Ronaldo leading the charge.

"Cristiano would help us in a lot of ways, without a doubt, but we can't stop with just him," he explained.

"He'll be expensive and we'll have to pay a lot of money, but we need more players because he won't be enough.

"For a few months now we have had a plan and we know what we want, but now Alexander Hleb has been added to that plan.

"We didn't know he would be able to leave Arsenal, but now it seems he will."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will be about as happy with Schuster as Ferguson but the German, who has impressed at Real since replacing England boss Fabio Capello at the end of last season, is not likely to be influenced by that.

He certainly does not see the man expected to be confirmed as the world's best player in December being a problem to his squad, no matter what massive price tag is attached and what attention he attracts. After all, this is the club that signed David Beckham.

"In this Madrid side, the kid wouldn't create any problems," he said.

"For the fans this signing would be an amazing explosion similar to what happened here when Beckham arrived.

"This isn't England, and that change will affect him. We have to be clever about this and sort this problem out for the kid."

Mancini has left Inter

The agent of Roberto Mancini has indicated that his client is no longer the coach of Serie A outfit Internazionale, although an official announcement has yet to be made by the Italian champions.

Mancini looks to be on his way out of the club less than a fortnight after delivering the club's third consecutive Serie A title.

"Roberto is very disappointed also because he has not yet finished his job - he wanted to try and win even more league titles, and maybe even the Champions League.

"Now Mourinho will arrive and he has only got to repeat what has happened in the last few years.

"Roberto is now considering making a statement to avoid gossip and it should be a statement praising the president and those who worked with him.

"Certainly he is shocked and has taken it badly.

"I have spoken with him and he sounded quite down, but tomorrow will be even worse."

Mancini has endured a turbulent season at the San Siro, tendering his resignation in the immediate aftermath of the club's Champions League elimination by Liverpool in March only to be talked into a rethink by Moratti.

"After the Liverpool game, there was tension and maybe Roberto could have avoided it, but the president knows him well and when he apologises, he does so because he realises he has done wrong," De Giorgis continued.

"Roberto has a great quality of being a good person so he has never given his availability to anybody else and has always done his job.

"These last three months have been very testing and the press have not been fair towards Inter.

"The club maybe let things get carried away, destabilising the atmosphere with all this gossip. But he always felt a lot for Inter and to try and lift him, I told him that maybe he will now be able to get back the 10 years he has lost while in Milan.

Strauss the hero

Edmilson switches to Villareal

Villarreal have signed Brazilian defender Edmilson on a free transfer from Barcelona.

The 31-year-old, who has won 40 caps with Brazil, joins the side on a two-year deal following the expiration of his contract with the Catalan club.

Edmilson spent four years in Barcelona, following spells with Sao Paulo and Lyon.

He was also part of Brazil squad which won the World Cup in 2002.

Fiorentina agree on Barzagli fee

Fiorentina have agreed a fee for Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli.

The Viola have offered to pay a sum believed to be around 10 million euros for the Palermo captain, who has been at the Stadio Renzo Barbera since 2004.

Barzagli still has to agree terms with Fiorentina but with the prospect of Champions League football in store, it is envisaged the 27-year-old will soon sign for the club he has supported since birth.
